Periodontal Disease Defined

You’ve seen the commercials for products that tout their ability to fight gingivitis. They have been formulated to attack the earliest form of gum disease. The word “gingiva,” one of the scientific terms for gums, is used interchangeably with the word “periodontal,” which is why gingivitis is what leads to periodontal disease.

There are four stages of periodontal disease. Gingivitis is considered the initial phase. If left untreated, gingivitis will advance to stage 2: slight periodontal disease, followed by stage 3: moderate periodontal disease and finally to stage 4: advanced periodontal disease. The symptoms discussed in this article can occur in varying degrees of severity in all 4 stages of periodontal disease. So, what should you be looking for?

Signs of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease can present itself in many different ways, and one of these symptoms on its own can be a sign of a separate issue. However, if you experience any of the symptoms listed below, you should consult with a dentist to see if you require treatment. Common signs of periodontal disease are as follows:

►   Bleeding gums: You have noticed that your gums bleed easily, especially after brushing or flossing.

►   Constant bad breath: You are offended by your own breath, and nothing seems to make it better.

►   Receding gums: Your gums seem to be pulling away from your teeth and may show signs of infection.

►   Loose tooth or teeth: You feel that you have a loose tooth or have lost one or more teeth without a     discernible cause.

►   Painful chewing: You avoid enjoying certain foods due to pain, or you have noticed unusual sensitivity to hot or cold foods.

►   Shifting bite: Your teeth look or even feel like they are in an altered position; you notice wider spaces between them that did not previously exist.

►   Discharge between your teeth and gums: Infection can result in a discharge of pus at the gumline which results in pain, swelling and bad breath.
